After the design shops we headed uptown to the jewish museum. Security was tight at the museum, an unpleasant reminder of what is going on the world, which we had tuned out for much of the vacation. Anyway, seeing this exhibit was one of the high points of my artistic life. This is an artist I have admired on every level for over ten years. She is one of my absolute favorites. She died young in the 1970's, and her work has mostly been stored out of site since then because of its fragility. This was the first time her work had been together in the same room since she died. It was an honor and an amazing act of providence to see it. John and I found out about it when we discovered the catalog for the exhibit in the Strand bookstore our first day in NY. We rushed to look at it, and looked at the dates of the exhibit, did a double or triple take, and finally realized the exhibit was now!

Eva Hesse, sculptor:

She took hard edged, intellectual minimalsim and humanized and 'messed it up', creating an absolute revolution in the direction art was taking. She died suddenly of a brain hemmorhage when she was about 35 years old. Posted by Picasa

Eva Hesse has been a major influence in my artistic life, too! I'm so jealous you got to see a bunch of her work. I heard she died in part from the toxicity of the materials she worked with.
